What is the Best Career Move You Can Make?

The Best Career Move You Can Make is to not Quit Your Job. The only time I recommend quitting your job is when you have secured another job that will allow you to further your career, provide a better financial package, and provides you will a more positive work environment from your current job. There are obviously other good reasons for quitting your job: Starting a family, starting a new business, going back to school to start a new career, or if you are in a good financial situation..travel the world, but the point is quitting your job, before securing a new job can have serious implications for your career.

It is so easy for us to want to quit: Bad boss, bad performance review, co-workers who are difficult to deal with, or the company is going in the wrong direction. Obviously, if you are in a situation that is really difficult and is causing you great mental and physical harm, then quitting may be the best thing to do. The majority of us are not in these severe situations and sometimes staying the course and investing more time in your current job, may be a great thing for your career in the long term.

Jobs can be like a marriage, you go through good and bad times and if you can think long term you may be surprised by the results that occur. It is important to not be reactive or quit at the first sign of trouble. The moment you quit and are no longer employed, employers may perceive you in a different light. Some employers may sub consciously put more value on those individuals who are employed vs. those individuals that are not working, even though they have same skill set and experience.

Quitting should never be the first option in dealing with a difficult work situation, but in some cases it may be the only option. Think carefully before quitting your job and consider the pros and cons before doing so and the impact it can have on your career.
