LinkedIn Recommendations vs. References I have many people ask me what is the difference between a LinkedIn recommendation and a Reference.

Recommendation- a high level, broad overview of your skills and expertise that gives LinkedIn members a sense of your capabilities and successes.

Reference- a more indepth, targeted overview of how your skills and experience fit a particular job you have interviewed for. A reference is more in-depth and may include not just your successes and capabilities, but also your weaknessess and areas for improvement.
