Politics are front and center in our lives today for those of us that live in the United States. We are in the middle of two heated political contests of the likes we have never seen before and which will have incredible implications to the direction that the United States will go in the future.   Politics matter for our countries and for our companies.  The question to ask yourself is, how do I effectively deal with the politics in my company, while staying true to my own political views and philosophy.

Staying true to your own political views and philosophy can be one of the hardest things to do.  We live in a climate today where people are very passionate about their politics and are not afraid to vocalize that.

Dealing with politics outside the workplace can be challenging itself, dealing with politics in the workplace can be one of the hardest things you encounter throughout your career.  Playing the political game in some cases can just be as important as being good at your job. Believe it or not, in some companies it is not always the smartest, hardest working and dedicated employees that get promoted, in some cases it is those employees that know how to align themselves with the power players in the company, follow their lead and build the trusting relationships that is necessary with those power players to move up in the company.

It is important to take the time to understand the political landscape within your company and decide who in the company you want to build a “political” alliance with.  Build political alliances that are in alignment with your own views and beliefs. Being the best you can be in your job is still one of the keys to successfully progress in your career, but also be mindful that it is important to build political alliances that can be a difference maker when you are being considered for a promotion.
